There are lots of non-actionable predictions for the year to come and overviews of the year past out there right now. But here are some practical articles I ran across recently. The numbers were low over the holidays.

Wesley LeFebvre, Making The Most of Meta Descriptions, DevNewz.com, 9 Jan 2011. Explains how to write a meta description, and how they are used in search engine results pages and social media marketing on Facebook and Google+.

Mark Brownlow, Double your sign-up rate? Practical advice for popover forms, Email Marketing Reports, 20 Dec 2011. Discusses types of pop-ups and popovers used to get subscribers to sign up. Apparently it can dramatically increase sign-ups, but can turn people off. Probably needs a strong sign-up incentive to compensate for intrusiveness. Suggests a 10 to 30 second delay. Negative impacts can include website behavior and list quality. Offers tips.

Infographic: Email Isn’t Dead, Marketing Land, 6 Jan 2012. Makes the case that e-mail is a robust communication medium.

Kim Krause Berg, 10 Search & Website Usability New Year Resolutions for 2012, Search Engine Land, 6 Jan 2011. Tips for improving website usability.

Angie Schottmuller, 6 SEO Jedi Tactics to Try Before Turning to the Dark Side, Search Engine Watch, 5 Jan 2011. Discusses universal search optimization, clever link bait, user generated content, microdata annotations and rich snippets, social media optimization, and SEO social networking.

Angie Shottmuller, Top 14 Things Marketers Need to Know About QR Codes, Search Engine Watch, 30 Dec 2011. Primer on QR codes.

Brad Geddes, How Savvy Is Your AdWords Account? 7 Areas To Audit, Search Engine Land, 2 Jan 2011. Recommends taking another look at extensions, search vs. daily campaigns, negative keywords, modified broad match, default bids, filters and automated rules.

Allan Gardyne, One way links explained, AssociatePrograms.com, updated 8 Nov 2011. Tips on how to get links to your side without reciprocating.
