There are lots of non-actionable predictions for the year to come and overviews of the year past out there right now. But here are some practical articles I ran across recently. The numbers were low over the holidays.

Apparently it can dramatically increase sign-ups, but can turn people off. Probably needs a strong sign-up incentive to compensate for intrusiveness. Suggests a 10 to 30 second delay. Negative impacts can include website behavior and list quality. Offers tips.
